Frequently Asked Questions About Varga Crystal

Here are some of the most common questions our clients ask about our Varga Crystal collection.

Varga Art Crystal was founded in Budapest, Hungary, and is dedicated to preserving the incredibly rare art of traditional Hungarian crystal making. Hungary has a centuries-old heritage of glassworking, and Varga employs some of the last remaining master engravers in the world who still utilize the ancient copper-wheel engraving technique. Today, Varga Crystal is considered a symbol of ultimate luxury, frequently commissioned by royalty, heads of state, and interior designers for the world's most prestigious estates.
The manufacturing process is entirely manual and highly labor-intensive. First, the glass is mouth-blown by artisans to achieve its perfect shape and clarity. Then, a master engraver uses a traditional copper-wheel lathe to cut deep, intricate patterns into the glass by hand. This technique allows for incredible depth, creating a 3D sculptural effect within the crystal walls that mass-produced, laser-etched glass simply cannot replicate.
On Amiramour, you will notice a clear Captiva Champagne Flute is €315, while a colored version (like Cobalt Blue or Amethyste) is €442. This is because the colored glasses utilize a highly complex technique called "cased crystal." A layer of colored crystal is mouth-blown directly over a layer of clear crystal. The artisan then hand-cuts through the colored layer to reveal the clear crystal beneath, creating a breathtaking two-tone effect that requires immense skill and precision.
A Double Old Fashioned (DOF) glass is a wide, short tumbler with a heavy base. Varga’s Captiva DOF Tumblers (available in clear and colors like Sky Blue) are the quintessential luxury vessel for serving "on the rocks" spirits, such as premium whisky, scotch, or bourbon, as the wide mouth accommodates large, slow-melting ice spheres perfectly.
