Frequently Asked Questions About Sambonet
Here are some of the most common questions our clients ask about our Sambonet collection.
The brand was founded in Vercelli, Italy, in 1856 when Giuseppe Sambonet—a Fine Arts graduate and the son of a nobleman—obtained his Master Goldsmith license and registered his "GS" seal with the mint in Turin. By the early 20th century, Sambonet became the Official Supplier to noble families, including the Duchess of Genoa and the Count of Turin. In 1932, they became the first company in Italy to build an industrial plant for sterling silver and galvanic silverware. Their international breakthrough occurred in 1956 when they beat 53 competitors to supply the prestigious Cairo Hilton. Today, as part of the Rosenthal family, they combine Italian design flair with unparalleled precision.
The "18/10" designation refers to the specific, premium alloy composition used in Sambonet’s stainless steel flatware. It consists of 18% chromium and 10% nickel. The chromium provides exceptional resistance to rust and corrosion (which is essential for maritime or coastal environments), while the 10% nickel significantly improves the metal's hardness and gives it a brilliant, silver-like, long-lasting mirror shine.
PVD stands for Physical Vapor Deposition. Rather than a simple painted coating, PVD is a highly advanced, eco-friendly vacuum process that bonds titanium and zirconium to the stainless steel at an atomic level. This results in striking, contemporary colors—such as Vintage Copper, Champagne, and Black—that are incredibly hard, highly resistant to scratching, and immune to fading over time.
A premium 36-piece cutlery set is designed to provide complete, multi-course service for six guests. It typically includes 6 table forks, 6 table knives, 6 table spoons (for soup), 6 dessert forks, 6 dessert knives, and 6 teaspoons. This is the ideal foundational set for a luxury dining room or yacht.
To prevent oxidation and scratching, high-end flatware should be stored in a dry environment. Silver-plated items should ideally be kept in anti-tarnish flannels or specialized, felt-lined cutlery canteens. Avoid wrapping silver in plastic bags or storing it near rubber or unvarnished wood, as the sulfur compounds in these materials will accelerate tarnishing.
