Frequently Asked Questions About Robbe & Berking
Here are some of the most common questions our clients ask about our Robbe & Berking collection.
Robbe & Berking was founded in 1874 in Flensburg, Germany, by silversmith Nicolaus Christoph Robbe and his son-in-law, Robert Berking. Over the last 150 years, it has remained a family-owned business, currently run by the fifth generation. They steadfastly refuse mass production, relying instead on traditional, manual silversmithing techniques. Today, they are globally recognized as the leading manufacturer of luxury silver cutlery, famously supplying the majority of the world's largest private yachts.
Robbe & Berking produces both, but they are most famous for their heavy silver-plate and solid sterling silver. The collections featured on Amiramour (like the Art Deco line) are crafted from their legendary 150g massive silver plate. This is a significantly thicker layer of silver than standard commercial plating, ensuring the cutlery can withstand generations of daily luxury use. They also produce select items in highly polished stainless steel, such as the Como Mocha Spoon.
High-end, handcrafted silver-plated cutlery is a generational investment. On Amiramour, a 36-piece Robbe & Berking Art Deco set (service for 6) is priced at €4,464. A comprehensive, 84-piece Art Deco set (service for 12, including serving pieces) is priced at €10,788.
A gourmet spoon (sometimes called a sauce spoon) features a flatter, wider, and sometimes slightly notched bowl compared to a standard soup spoon. As seen in the Robbe & Berking Art Deco Gourmet Spoon, it is specifically designed for fine dining courses involving rich sauces, reductions, or delicate fish dishes, allowing the diner to scoop up every drop of the chef's sauce.
The difference lies in the size and the cup it accompanies. A mocha spoon (like the 11cm Como spoon) is very small, designed specifically to stir espresso or Turkish coffee served in tiny demitasse cups. A standard coffee spoon or teaspoon (like the 13cm Arcade spoon) is slightly longer, meant for standard coffee or teacups.
