Frequently Asked Questions About Daum
Here are some of the most common questions our clients ask about our Daum collection.
The
Daum story
began in 1878 when Jean Daum, a notary and financier, took over a struggling glassworks named Verrerie Sainte Catherine in Nancy, France, to save it from bankruptcy. After his death, his sons Auguste and Antonin Daum transformed the factory into a powerhouse of the Art Nouveau movement. Operating alongside Émile Gallé, Daum won a Grand Prix at the 1900 Paris Universal Exhibition, securing its status as one of the most influential glassmakers in history.
Daum is globally unique due to its mastery of the pâte de verre (glass paste) or pâte de cristal technique. Unlike traditional blown glass where color is applied to the surface, Daum incorporates crushed, colored crystal directly into a mold. This results in an opaque yet translucent, textured finish with subtle gradients and moiré effects that cannot be replicated by standard glassblowing.
Daum’s glassware is created in France, where the brand’s artisans continue to uphold centuries-old glassmaking traditions.
While Daum glassware is primarily designed for decorative and luxury use, some pieces can be used for special occasions.
Yes. Because of their limited production runs, the highly complex 140-year-old artisanal process, and their place in art history, Daum pieces are highly prized by collectors.
